Chapter 9
Yani showed back up two weeks after the ordeal at the bus repair warehouse. Crescent and I were sitting on the porch sipping on a bottle of Patron when this black-and-purple 2020 BMW truck pulled up to the curb in front of the house with mirror tints on it. The paint had the Louis Vuitton logo all through it.
When I first saw it, I jumped up and slid my hand under my shirt, cupping the handle of my ten-shot .45. before I backed toward the house. Crescent somehow got behind me and dropped the bottle weâd been sipping on.
âMane, who the fuck is that?â he asked, opening the door to the house and was halfway inside of it.
âI donât know, but they can get these bullets sent first class.â I cocked the .45 and jumped off of the porch with the pistol at my side.
It was around six in the afternoon on a cool day. Even though the sun was out, it felt cold and had been windy the entire day. There were only a few people sitting on their porches, and they were at the other end of the block. I could see them from where I stood on the porch.
Crescent eased into the house, closing the door. I could have sworn I heard it lock. I threw my hands in the air and waited on the truck to bust a move. I was already in a foul mood. Iâd been up all night, unable to get a wink of sleep. All of the souls from the many people Iâd slain felt as if they were haunting me. Every time I closed my eyes for more than a few minutes, I was being accosted. Iâd wake up in cold sweats with my heart beating fast. I was tired of it, so Iâd stayed up, getting higher than Mars.
âWhatâs good?â I hollered, walking toward the truck on some death wish shit. I was seconds away from airing it out.
When I got about five feet from the passengerâs side, the window rolled down. This made me jump back, ready to fire. I raised my gun and aimed, then Yani called my name.
âHeinous! You betâ not shoot up my truck, boy!â
The sound of her voice melted me. I tucked the foâ-nickel back into the small of my back and bent over to look inside of the truck. âAw, shit, Yani. Ma, is that you?â
She rolled the window all the way down. âYeah, itâs me. Get yoâ ass in. I need ta holler at you about something.â
Crescent opened the door to the house and came back onto the porch. âHeinous, who the fuck is that?â
I waved his soft-ass off. I coulda sworn he locked the front door. I wasnât sure, but I still felt some type of way. âNigga, itâs good. Iâll be back in a minute.â
I slid into Yaniâs soft leather seats, and as I closed the door, the seatbelt wrapped around me and clicked into place. She drove away from the curb, the truck navigating with a light humming sound.
